The Tight House

The Tight House

We’re in a boring phase of waiting for bids from contractors right now, so I’m going to amuse myself by answering some of the asked and unasked questions about the upcoming construction.  Today it’s about the dreaded ‘tight house’. I’ve been noticing something when explaining our plans to people, and that’s the sudden alert look in their eye when I mention how airtight the house will be.  At first I think I’ve found a true building nerd who’s interested in building envelopes, but once the questions start, I know I’m wrong.  The...

Plans

Yesterday morning marked another milestone in our project.  We reviewed the plans with the general contractors that were recommended to us, allowing them to ask questions directly from the architect.  The construction plans are largely complete at this point, which means that the next steps are to get bids, get the building permit from the city, and start figuring out how this will fit into everyone’s schedule. I swore that when we moved into our house and were settled, there would be at least a few decades before our next move.  These last few weeks, packing box after box as our house continues to heat up, I think about that statement.  My thoughts go one of two ways.  At times, I repeat to myself, “I swore I would never move again.” followed by a few curse words as I’m lugging yet another heavy box of books to the garage. Then there are days like yesterday.  I believe the temperature yesterday reached over 90 degrees and our air conditioner struggled all day to keep up.  At...

Colors, tested

The girls and I picked up some samples of the colors we chose at our color meeting last night.  Here are the results.  The left side is Jamesboro Gold for the base and Bleeker Beige for the trim.  The right side is Greenfield Pumpkin for the base and Putnam Ivory for the base.  All colors are Benjamin Moore. What do you think?
