No TV? Really?

Posted by on Jul 30, 2011 in Entertainment | 3 comments

We get asked this question all of the time.  Neither Paul nor I had a television when we met and we just never got one.  After 12 years, it’s not really something that we miss.  After having the girls, it has become something that we really don’t want in our house right now. We just got our electrical plan this week and we were faced with the question of where to put the TV hookups?  Well, that question lead us to the more important question….we haven’t planned for the entertainment system?  Okay, okay, we don’t have a TV but that doesn’t mean we...

Days 12 & 13: Opening up the 2nd Floor

A quick reminder that the groundbreaking ceremony will be Monday, at 2 PM!  It’s open to everyone, and we’ll have people from the team, including the designer, architect and builder.  We’ll also have people from the industry (including one or two of our sponsors), so if you’re interested, swing by.  We will be having construction tours and post-construction tours in the future, but Monday will be the best day to learn more about the project and talk to everyone involved in person!  Plus we’ll have refreshments from Turtle Bread Company. The days are beginning...

Day 10: Bathroom Down, Coop Moved

Today the focus was on the basement bathroom, a place that was terrifying in the best of times. When we moved in, we didn’t think much of the room, as it was in the damp and/or cold basement.  For the first couple of years, we didn’t use it at all.  It was tiny, all vent pipes and water supplies were exposed, and occasionally the sewer would back up into the shower.  None of these is conducive to a clean feeling when using a bathroom, so we just left it alone. Two years ago, the upstairs bathroom (our only other bathroom) shower sprung a leak.  The leak was coming from the...

Day 9: Salvage Failure

Day 9: Salvage Failure

Today was supposed to be the day we would pull up the hardwood floor in what we call the “old addition”.  I’ve read a fair amount about how to go about this process, but everything went off the rails as soon as we applied theory to practice.  But first the theory: the plank is held in two ways, as tongue and groove into adjoining wood planks, and via nails that are hammered into the side of the plank.  The goal is to lift the individual planks of flooring up so that the nails are lifted out of the floor as they separate from neighboring planks.  As usual, the reality was...
