Days 51 & 52: Changes

As was reported a couple of weeks ago, the north side had to undergo some changes to accommodate the existing foundation condition and a code issue.  The first is pretty straightforward – because the house is closer than current code setback (6′ in Minneapolis), the remodeled building can’t be any closer than the original one was.  It was going in that direction, so the insulation assembly had to be changed.  The second issue was around what the wall was composed of; if you’re within 5′ of  a property line, the building must have an ignition barrier...

Day 48: Windows School

On Friday, Seth from Peak Building Products showed up to help with the window installation.  We’ve been giving the windows suspicious looks over the last couple of weeks, as we had a somewhat bad experience getting them unloaded.  Aside from their monstrous bulk, we never figured out how to take a window out of its frame (which would have made things much easier), how to carry one without chewing up the cork insulation, and what to do with the big box of installation materials. Seth revealed all secrets in no time, as promised.  Removing the windows from their frames turned out to...

Getting Through

When we were just in the planning stages, people were already giving us advice.  We heard things like, “Make sure you have a solid marriage.”  and “It will be tough but it will be so worth it in the end.”.  I have heard of people getting divorced over projects less complex and life altering than ours.  So, from the beginning, I have been very cognizant of the kind of stress that we’re all dealing with and have been intentional about how we’ve dealt with it. I’m not going to lie about it.  There were plenty of nights this summer when I drifted off...
